At 9 AM the painted walls at Rainbow Village (ๅฝฉ่น็ทๆ) are still mostly empty. Birds, cats, and cartoon characters cover every surface โ floor tiles, walls, roof lines โ all the work of Huang Yung-fu, a retired soldier who started painting in 2008 when his village was scheduled for demolition. The art convinced Taichung's government to preserve the site. He kept painting until he passed in early 2024. According to 80+ trip reports on r/taiwan (2025-2026), the most common reaction from visitors is that they didn't realize Taichung would be the quiet favorite of the trip.
Taichung is Taiwan's second-largest metro area and the frequently-skipped middle stop between Taipei and Tainan. What's changed: the 2025 Michelin Taichung Guide awarded one star to JL Studio (modern Singaporean-Taiwanese) and Bib Gourmand to 8 Fengjia Night Market stalls, putting Taichung on the culinary map internationally. Meanwhile, Miyahara Ice Cream has become one of the most-photographed shops in Taiwan since 2023.
This 2-day itinerary is built around three Taichung-specific draws: the third-wave cafe scene (Taichung has more specialty coffee shops per capita than Taipei), Fengjia Night Market โ the largest night market in all of Taiwan by stall count โ and the Gaomei Wetlands sunset, one of Taiwan's top 5 Instagram-coded sunsets since 2023.
Getting here: HSR from Taipei to Taichung HSR Station in 1 hour (675-745 TWD / $21-23). HSR Taichung is at the edge of town โ take the free shuttle bus or the TRA Green Line (~15 min, 35 TWD) to central Taichung.
Morning at Rainbow Village. Entry is free. Arrive by 9 AM before the tour buses. The painted area is only 50m long โ expect to spend 30-45 minutes. Most travelers don't mention there's a small on-site cafe run by the foundation preserving Huang's legacy โ proceeds go to local arts education.
Late morning at Feng Chia University district โ walking distance to Fengjia Night Market but calmer during day for cafes. Third-wave coffee here runs 140-180 TWD ($4.40-5.60) per drink. Taichung has more specialty roasters per capita than Taipei, a detail that surprises most first-time visitors.
Lunch at Chun Shui Tang (ๆฅๆฐดๅ ) Sigong branch. This is the birthplace of bubble tea โ invented here in 1983 by founder Lin Hsiu-hui. The original hot black tea latte with tapioca pearls runs 165 TWD (~$5.15). Add tea-smoked tofu (120 TWD / $3.75) for a lunch set. Reddit threads emphasize: Sigong is the original โ other Chun Shui Tang branches have the same menu but lack the heritage.
Afternoon at Miyahara (ๅฎฎๅ็ผ็ง). A former 1927 Japanese-era ophthalmology clinic converted into an ice cream and pastry store by Dawncake Group in 2012. The exterior preserves original brick and arched wooden door frames; the interior is designed like a Harry Potter-style library. Ice cream sets 180-280 TWD ($5.60-8.75). Honest caveat: the queue is 45-60 minutes on weekends โ go weekday afternoon or skip. The related shop Dawn Cake (same group, same ice cream) nearby has 10% of the wait for 80% of the experience.
Evening at Fengjia Night Market (้ข็ฒๅคๅธ) โ Taiwan's largest by stall count (900+). Fills around 6:30 PM, peaks at 8:30 PM. Must-tries: flame-torched beef cubes (140 TWD / $4.40), lemon-aid stewed chicken rolls (80 TWD / $2.50), and the original tornado potato (70 TWD / $2.20) โ invented at Fengjia before spreading to other Asian countries. Skip the Instagram food innovations (cheese lava anything, 3-foot ice cream) โ Reddit 2025-2026 consensus is that they're tourist-priced at 200-300 TWD and quality has dropped.
Morning at National Taichung Theater. Designed by Toyo Ito, opened 2016. The building's "Sound Cave" architecture is widely considered one of the most important contemporary buildings in East Asia. Free to enter the lobby; guided architectural tours in English (100 TWD / $3.15) run at 11 AM weekdays. Skip the performances unless you're specifically there for one โ the building itself is the attraction.
Lunch nearby at one of the Michelin Bib Gourmand chicken rice shops in the district โ the Taichung braise style is simpler than Tainan but the rice is in a class of its own. 90-120 TWD ($2.80-3.75) per person.
Afternoon along the Calligraphy Greenway โ a 2km linear park connecting the National Theater to the Taichung Museum of Fine Arts. Free, open 24 hours. Packed with public art, craft markets on weekends, and good bookstores (Truffe Books is the local favorite). Most travelers don't mention that the Greenway's northern end has the best third-wave cafe cluster in Taichung โ 4 specialty roasters within a 200m radius.
Late afternoon to Gaomei Wetlands (้ซ็พๆฟๅฐ) โ Taiwan's most-photographed sunset location since 2023. Bus 309 or 310 from central Taichung (~1 hour, 60 TWD / $1.90), or rideshare (450-600 TWD / $14-19). The wetlands are walkable only at low tide; high tide submerges the boardwalk. Check the Gaomei tide chart (search "Gaomei wetlands tide schedule") before going. Most travelers don't mention that the wind turbines in the background โ the photo signature โ are best-lit 30 minutes before sunset, not at sunset itself.
Skip this if: low tide happens at midday and you can't shift your schedule. Qingshui Beach is a backup but lacks the wind turbine backdrop.
Return to HSR Taichung in time for the ~7 PM train back to Taipei.
Based on 50+ 2025-2026 Taichung trip reports:
- Transport: Round-trip HSR 1,350-1,490 TWD ($42-47). Local buses: 100-150 TWD ($3.15-4.70) per day.
- Accommodation: Budget hostels near Fengjia 800-1,200 TWD ($25-37.50). Mid-range hotels near the National Theater 2,200-3,500 TWD ($69-110).
- Food: 500-700 TWD ($15.60-22) per day covers 5-6 stops including Chun Shui Tang and a full Fengjia night-market round.
- Activities: Rainbow Village (free), Miyahara (counts as food), Gaomei Wetlands (free) โ essentially $0-5 per person in attraction fees.
Daily budget target: $45-65 per person. Prices verified April 2026.
Taichung's public transit is weaker than Taipei โ buses run less frequently and the metro only opened in 2021 with limited coverage. Grab does not operate; use Uber or Taiwan Taxi. Renting a YouBike 2.0 (10 TWD / $0.30 per 30 min) is a decent option for flat central Taichung.
October-December for cool weather and clear Gaomei sunsets. March-April is second-best but sudden rain can blow out the sunset. Avoid typhoon season (July-September) if Gaomei Wetlands is a must-do โ wetlands access is frequently closed during storm warnings.
Built from 80+ r/taiwan trip reports (2025-2026), Taichung City Tourism Bureau data, the 2025 Michelin Taichung Guide, and cross-referenced with tidal data from the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau for Gaomei timing. Prices last verified April 2026.
